The Gulf side of the island consists of miles and miles of beautiful white sand beaches that are world famous among shell collectors. The bay side of Sanibel and Captiva are primarily covered with mangrove forest and a few small beaches. Fishing, fly fishing, boating and shelling are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Sanibel has a permanent resident population of about 6,000 and Captiva has only about 400. During the winter tourist season the population peaks to 25,000.
